Mask Makeup

February 25, 2021

Something we have all needed to adjust to within the past year is getting glam underneath a mask. It is absolutely essential to wear a mask, and makeup and a mask aren’t exactly symbiotic to each other. Sometimes I just…don’t want to when it comes to putting on a face of makeup. Why bother when most of it will end up on my mask? A huge change from when I used to go to work every day and do my makeup about 5 or 6 days a week. But sometimes, I still want to feel glam for myself. I actually enjoy the process of doing my makeup (sometimes) and it makes me feel happy. And yes, sometimes I do a full face to go somewhere that ends up turning my mask into something resembling a finger painting. Kind of gross, kind of worth it, I know. I’ve tried several different routines for perfecting (ish!) the mask makeup face and am going to share my fave products with you all in this post!

My favorite look and feel to achieve is a glowy, fresh, glam but natural face when doing makeup with a mask. I absolutely love Wander Beauty’s Smooth Sailing Perfecting Primer. This has the most amazing texture and feel on the skin, talk about velvety.  I like to wear this by itself, or under foundation. It’s so versatile! If I am wearing foundation, Yves Saint Laurent All Hours Longwear Natural Matte Foundation holds it ground against a mask. It hardly transfers, provides natural coverage and actually does last for hours on hours. I use the shade BR40, or Cool Sand. They have an extensive shade range which I love. I always still do concealer, even if I’m not doing foundation for the day. The dark circles under my eyes have zero chill. My two picks for concealer are Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Concealer and Kosas Revealer Super Creamy + Brightening Concealer.  I use shades 110 C Ivoire and 2.5 respectively. The Lancome concealer has some serious staying power and slightly heavier coverage (take that, dark circles) while the Kosas gives a brighter, more dewy finish. Sometimes I use a combination of them. For some color, I can’t get enough of Wander Beauty Double Date Cheek and Lip Stain. This gives you a super easy tint of color that really doesn’t fade! I love the shade Rendezvous, a fun pink/berry. If I am highlighting and contouring I have a few good choices. For contour I use Fenty Beauty Match Stix in Bamboo and Mocha. These sticks make it so quick and easy!! For highlight, my favorite, I prefer Benefit Cosmetics High Beam liquid highlighter for a fresh, shimmery gleam. If I want my highlight to pop more, I use the Fenty Beauty Match Shimmer Stix. My favorite shade is Trippin, a gorgeous bronze gold color. Or, if you are really feeling bold, Pink Lemonade gives you a pink strobe that is absolutely fabulous. Last step is to set it all with Hourglass Veil Translucent setting powder and Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. These two will protect your makeup from your mask like no other setting items will.

I saved the best for last, the eyes! This is only part of your face people really see when you are wearing a mask, so have fun with it and make them pop! Sticking with the theme of a quick, easy face the gives gleaming fresh vibes, here is my quick eye look I usually use. I always prime my eyelids with Nars Pro Prime Smudge Proof eyeshadow base. This makes for a smooth application and long lasting shadow. If you’re putting makeup on to put a mask over it, I am of the opinion the routine should be pretty easy and fast to do. My  favorite quick eye look is to use Kat Von D’s Vegan Dazzle Stick Eyeshadow in Flash Storm. This shimmery sterling color has just the right amount of sparkle, and I then blend it out with my Tarte Make Believe in Yourself palette using the shade Pixie, a soft pink with gold shimmer and the pearl shade in the center. My staple beauty look is winged liner, I actually am unsure if I could live without it, so I top the shadow with Soap & Glory Supercat Eyeliner. I found this liner at Walgreens years ago and it is the best. It makes doing winged liner so easy and it doesn’t budge! Even when you rub your eyes, if you sometimes forget you have makeup on like me. I finish with Kiko Milano Baseline Luxurious Lashes extra volume mascara in Black. I found this mascara at Ulta for only $12 and I love it!! Doesn’t smudge or clump and holy volume!!

I hope you all enjoy and find my mask makeup recommendations helpful!! I would love to hear if you end up trying any of these products, and to hear some of your favorite mask makeup products and looks! I look forward to reading your comments, happy glamming!
